Volume snapshots#

A Volume snapshot is a snapshot of the disk’s state at the moment, a copy of its file system.

You can use a volume snapshot to:

  • clone a volume - so you can create a new volume from a snapshot;

  • clone the virtual server - create a new virtual server from the created new volume;

  • change the volume type - save the volume’s state using a snapshot and create the same volume but in a different type.

A volume snapshot is not a virtual server’s volume backup - it is stored on the same hardware and requires the main storage to be able to perform any operation. If you want to set up a backup of a system or secondary volume, use automatic backup in the volume settings.
